Tips to help keep your horses calm around Fireworks Night.

Bonfire Night can be a stressful time of year for our horses, as the sudden loud noises and flashing lights from fireworks can easily spook them. We have written out a simple guide to help you and your horse this year have a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night.

Plan Ahead and Gather Information

Firework displays are often announced in advance. Keep an eye out for local posters, check local social media groups and ask neighbours to find out about any local private events. This helps you prepare and schedule extra support if needed, or even consider moving your horse temporarily if there’s a particularly loud event nearby.

Stick to Your Routine

Horses thrive on routine, and disrupting their schedule can increase stress. Keep their feeding, turnout, stabling and exercise times as close to normal as possible. The predictability of routine can help your horse feel more secure during the noise and chaos of Fireworks Night.

Create a Safe and Calm Environment

You can create a safe and calm environment by bringing your horses in. Close stable doors and windows to block out some of the light and muffle sounds. Playing a radio or music in the stable can provide a distraction from the sounds outside. Just ensure the radio is positioned safely out of reach to prevent any accidents. If you do not have the option of stabling, ensure your horses have access to shaded shelter to help block out the light and help your horse feel safe.

Be Present and Provide Reassurance

Being with your horse during the fireworks can offer them comfort and reassurance. Spend time with them, calmly engaging and providing a distraction from the unsettling noise. If you can’t be around your horses, arrange for a trusted person to be on-site or check in to keep an eye on things.

Consider Professional Help for Anxious Horses

Please always contact a vet for help before giving your horse any medication. Particularly nervous or reactive horses may benefit from using a mild sedative to keep them calm while fireworks are taking place.

Dress warmly and stay safe around your horse, as their behaviour may be unpredictable during fireworks. Avoid risky handling and stay calm, as your horse will pick up on any nerves.
